The Transient Diaries

Monday, August 31, 2009

I have realized our blog is misleading. To the uniformed reader it appears we went straight from getting married in Utah to our new home in San Antonio! This is so not true. For almost a month after we got married we traveled all over the US. For my own peace of mind, I feel that I must document this crazy month we just experienced. So here goes...

Week after we got married: HONEYMOON IN CABO SAN LUCAS

Scary water taxi to the famous arch... look at that huge wave that's about to capsize our little boat. Yeah, slightly unnerving.
Sitting at our resort pool chairs.

Week two: HOUSE SITTING IN SALT LAKE CITY
I have no clue what's going on in this picture, and I actually don't think we are even in Salt Lake. But I thought it was funny, so now you get to look at it.

Week three: SPOKANE, WASHINGTON
We went to my house for a week in Spokane and had a great time. Here we spent lots of time on the lake and getting ready for reception #2 in my backyard. It was fun to have absolutely nothing on our schedules and to spend time with both our families at once. Thanks again to the Lewis/Milne families for driving up, and to my family for the amazing reception and more! We are so blessed with such amazing families.
Reception #2 with B and Stu (hey that rhymes!)
So one morning in Spokane this is the creepy face I woke up to. Russ had woken up at 6 am on his own and shaved his beard to this little number. When I woke up a little later he found my reaction to his mustache quite amusing. It's OK if you think it's creepy and disturbing... I do too.
We spent the weekend at a rental house on Long Lake. It was so fun lounging around with family and getting those early morning water skiing runs on pure glass in. Here I am with Marcella and Anthony Milne.
Boat times. We love boat times.

Week three: BACK TO UTAH FOR THE LAST TIME
Sounds dramatic, I know. But it actually was. Russ and I have both spent the last 5 or 6 years of our lives in Utah making close friends and being near our families. As much as we were excited to get out and have our own adventures, we were still sad to leave our families and close friends. We said so many goodbyes...

Goodbyes to friends... here I am with Danielle, one of my best friends/former roommates
Goodbyes to bikes... I know, I was just as shocked as you. But Russ sold his second love (Jamie the mountain bike) to his good friend Dane since Texas lacks in extreme mountainous trails. It truly was just as heart wrenching.
Goodbyes to family... I will miss being down the street from my big sis and her husband. It has been fun becoming best friends with my sister.

[also]

Goodbye to my hair! I chopped it. I did the deed in anticipation of 80% humidity in Texas, and am glad I did. I miss the long hair, but this short new do is much easier to handle. Sigh...

Week four: ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO
It was fun going to Albuquerque to see Russ's stomping grounds and where he grew up. The people were so nice in Albuquerque, and we had fun at our reception #3 (horizontal rain and all).
Last wedding reception!
Russ is saying hello to his childhood house.
Seeing the sights of Albuquerque... and matching (totally coincidental. I guess the whole "married couple" thing is already getting to us)

Week five: MOVING TO TEXAS!!!!!!!
We were really excited to get to San Antonio and finally unpack the suitcases we had been living out of for 5 weeks. The drive was actually quite miserable as Russ and I had to drive separately with him in the moving truck and me in the other car. But after 22 hours of driving we made it!

Russ's ride, that lucky duck. (sarcasm) He really got into the whole "tough trucker guy" thing.
The lovely view I stared at for many, many hours.
...and this is how I felt about it.

Anyway, we're here now, and that's all that matters. This last month of transience has been quite the adventure and we feel so lucky to have had this time after we got married. But now we are here and, believe it or not, are so very ready to start working and get back to "real life." Does that mean we're responsible adults now?

PS. Our tip to Austin failed... we are still dining on our cardboard box.

Is this real life?

We love this video. It doesn't matter how many times we watch it, it just gets funnier each time.

Sometimes I wish I could just belt out a loud scream like David whenever I want (see 0:57).

Tables and Chairs

Thursday, August 27, 2009

Tomorrow we are taking our first excursion out of San Antonio to the great neighboring city of AUSTIN where we will hopefully bring a new table into our little family. San Antonio seems to have everything except an Ikea... which is unfortunately an essential store for a newly married couple lacking on monetary funds. I guess anything would be an upgrade from the table we have been dining on, as seen below:

Anyway, it's going to be a fun day and we're pretty excited to explore more of the lone star state.

And as an addendum to our table happenings (which I'm sure is incredibly thrilling), Russ and I ate at a restaurant called "Flying Star" while we were in Albuquerque last weekend. It defines the "cutesy cafe" that every girl longs to go to and every admirable guy happily tags along. It was such a fun place and you got to read magazines while waiting for your food. I found this quote while browsing:

Nothing
great has been and
nothing great can be accomplished
without passion

Hey Y'all, We're Here

WE MADE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Russ and I are now in SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS at our new apartment. Our apartment is still a disaster and we're still getting stuff figured out, but we are absolutely loving our place and this incredible city. I was pleasantly surprised by how green everything is, and am just trying to ignore how blistering hot it is in the middle of the day. (I'll let you know how that goes). Either way, we can now unpack the suitcases we have been living out of for the last month and say we are HOME. Pictures and more updates are soon to come.

PS. Happy one month aniversary to us!

Goodbye P-town

Friday, August 21, 2009

It's 6:45 in the morning, and Russ and I are just about ready to hit the road... after I finish my bowl of cereal. We are starting our journey down to TEXAS!!

I have been in Provo for 5 years now, and honestly, got a little emotional about leaving. But it is time, and I am so excited for this new adventure ahead of us.

So, this is it. Goodbye Provo. Goodbye Utah. It's been good. Really good.

Just a few for you...

We have had many requests for some pictures of the "big day." I haven't been able to cater to these requests because we still have not received our professional pictures back. However, an unexpected gem arrived today--a disc of pictures from my grandpa's camera! So enjoy some pictures, but keep in mind the "real" ones are yet to come! A Hard Day's Night

Sunday, August 9, 2009

This is my first blog entry as a married man. As such, I have to really focus to keep from rambling on about multi-touch screens or other weird things like on my previous blogs, and actually write about my life. So here goes.

This past week we have been house sitting in SLC for some very kind friends. The days consisted of errands, moving out of provo, and Twitter. Yeah I have still been the twitter master for @worldhistory for FamilyLink.com. It was a little slow as of late because of the denial-of-service attack launched mid-week.

So during the down time, I learned all about the Beatles and their revelutionary usage of monitor speakers at the concert in 1965 at Atlanta stadium. It was the first time speakers were pointed back towards a performing band so they could actually hear themselves over the thousands of screaming women. After learning this, I sparked an idea for a fun date with Camille. I found us some tickets to the concert.

I found the set list and made a playlist on her iPod so we could "go" to the concert. I also called Blockbuster and reserved a copy of "A Hard Day's Night", a Beatles movie. The plan was to go the SLC temple, then afterwards pick up burritos from Barbacoa prior to going out to the concert on the Salt Flats. I was really pumped to go out on the Salt Flats and top out the Camry. (Random history fact: land speed record of 662 mph was made out on the Salt Flats using the "Blue Flame" jet engine car). Anyways, after coming out of the temple, we stepped into a massive wind storm that was taking power out in various parts of the city. So we resorted to jamming out in the car, and taking the movie back to the apartment. By the end of the movie I could tell the 4 Beatles apart and identify them by voice in their songs. (Baby steps Camille, baby steps.) Despite the weather, it was a really fun date and it turns out that the Beatles still do perform Rain, Shine, or wind.

Transient Living

Thursday, August 6, 2009

So Russ and I got married 12 days ago now, and we won't be in our "home/apartment complex" in San Antonio until August 25th! Yeah, that's like 2 1/2 weeks. So where have we been living and what do we plan to do for this awkward interim period of the summer?

Well let me tell you: we are official transients. Full-fledged roamers. Squatters. Homeless.

For this week we got really lucky and hit the jack-pot with some family connections that were out of town for 7 days. It's been fun living up in Salt Lake by the University of Utah in someone else's house. It still catches me off guard every time I see all these frames with faces that are not our own. But one thing is for sure--other people's lives are intriguing!

On Saturday we must leave our temporary abode and are thus trekking up to Spokane to live in my parent's basement for a week. I must admit, I'm pretty stoked: mom's cooking, Spokane wedding reception in my backyard, and lots and lots of water skiing.

After that? Who knows! Russ's parents? Hotel? The wilderness? I guess only time will tell.

Welcome, friends
